Top 5 Tips on How to Paint a Bedroom

Your house is your castle, and that’s how it should make you feel every time you come home. That’s especially true of bedrooms. When you arrive home after a long day at work, the last thing you need is a bedroom that doesn’t look or feel like your own personal space. Repainting a bedroom can have a huge impact on the look and feel of your home, and it’s DIY-friendly if you don’t mind tackling the work yourself! To help you out, we’re going to go over our top 5 tips on how to paint a bedroom and achieve results you’ll be thrilled with.

1. Spend a Bit Extra on Quality Paints and Products

Paints and painting equipment are still one of those areas where you get what you pay for. That goes both for paint and equipment like brushes and rollers! Cheap brushes and rollers have a tendency to fall apart while you’re using them, leaving your freshly painted wall covered in roller fur and bristles that look terrible. For a simple bedroom paint job you’ll only need:

  • An angled sash cutting in brush
  • A medium nap roller

It’s a good idea to have more than one roller cover and a few different types of brush, but an angled sash cutter will do the best job for cutting in around details like window frames.

2. Prepare the Room Thoroughly

We’re sure you’ve heard it before, but good prep work is the key to any painting project. Spending extra time on preparation means the end result looks better, lasts longer and reduces the amount of cleanup.

Your prep work should involve all of the following:

  • Thoroughly wash new brushes and roller covers ahead of time
  • Clean the walls with warm water and gentle soap, allowing them to dry fully before painting starts
  • Remove the face plates from light switches and power points
  • Mask off around details like window frames, power points and light fittings
  • Lay down canvas drop cloths to protect any furniture or carpet from spills and drips

3. Think About Your Painting Technique

Now we get to the actual paintwork! Before you reach for your brush and start slapping it on, take a second to think about the order you’re going to paint the room and the technique you’ll use.

To get a seamless result like professional painters do, the best technique is to be methodical and work on one surface at a time. Pick a wall to start with and then cut-in around the edges and details. Next, roll paint onto that same wall. Paint should be rolled on as evenly as possible. That means each stroke should apply paint from the bottom of the wall to the top of the wall in a single motion. Roller strokes should also overlap by about 50% for better coverage.

Once you’ve rolled paint onto the entire wall, you can move onto the next one and start cutting-in again. For specific painting directions, follow the manufacturer’s instructions on your can of paint.

4. Get Everything Cleaned Up

Once the job is complete you’ll need to clean things up. While the paint on the wall is still wet, it’s a good idea to remove any masking tape before you get sidetracked with cleaning your brushes.

Modern water-based paints are simple to clean up. Run brushes and roller sleeves under cold water and gently work them against the bottom of the basin to get paint out of the fibres. Oil-based paints need to be cleaned up with a solvent like turpentine – just make sure there’s good ventilation in the room.

If there’s more painting to do tomorrow, wrap your brushes and rollers (leave the sleeve on the roller handle) tightly in a plastic bag.

5. Get Started Early in the Day

Natural light is your friend for painting, so get started early in the day and make sure you have enough light work by. If it’s a multi-day job, stop painting as the light fades and continue your work tomorrow. Painting in low light is difficult and the results don’t always turn out great, so it should be avoided wherever possible.
