Chalking/fading happens when a paint coating breaks down, there are several reasons this could happen.

  1.  Sunlight and UV radiation. Chalking occurs in external environments when a painted surface is exposed to high levels of sunlight over a long period of time. The higher the temperatures, the quicker this will occur.
  2. Dark coloured paints. Darker colours heat up and absorb sunlight more than lighter colours and therefore fade quicker.
  3. Living near the ocean. When combining salt and sunlight this creates a corrosive environment, paintwork will fade quicker near the ocean.
  4. Correct film thickness. This is why 2 coats is important as a minimum. If paint is not put on thick enough or thinned out too much it will fade quicker.
  5. Wrong product. This is why it is important to use an experienced painting contractor, like our Gold Coast painting team. We understand the correct products to use and the correct techniques to make a paint job last. Once fading/chalking has started it is irreversible. The only way to fix the problem is to pressure wash it and repaint it with a UV resistant coating system.
