Paint is an amazing tool for transforming the look and feel of your home, and it’s a great way to increase the value of a property come sale time. The rough and tumble of everyday life is all it takes to wear down the walls in your home. As paint fades and stains and imperfections accumulate, your home can begin to look a little tired, both inside and out. Applying a few coats of fresh paint can spruce up any space in your home, hide damage and ensure you get the best price possible when it goes under the hammer.

In our ultimate guide to painting your home to sell, we’re going to go over all the things you need to think about when planning to refresh your property!

Choose an Appealing Paint Scheme

The walls of our homes tend to collect scratches, chips and dents over the years. Whether it’s by accident or the malicious act of a toddler, those imperfections all take their toll on the overall look and feel of a room. Any good paint job needs to begin with some repair work.

Go around your home with a torch and something you can use to mark your walls, like small pieces of painter’s tape. Use the torch to inspect the walls and mark any damage you find with a small square of tape. Once that’s done, you can get out some sandpaper and plaster filler to sand back and repair any issues that a new coat of paint won’t cover.

Invest in Quality Paints

It might be tempting to cut your costs by opting for cheap paints, but it’s a decision that can create lots of extra work. High quality paints look better, provide superior coverage and keep the painting process moving along smoothly.

You can always ask your paint supplier to provide advice on which paint products to choose. A good rule of thumb is to always buy from reputable brands and to select paints that are specified for your use. For instance, bathrooms and laundries should be painted with products that are suitable for wet areas. Or, if you’re painting over a feature like a brick fireplace, masonry paint ensures you’ll get the best possible result.

Consider Painting the Exterior of the House

You spend all day inside your home, so it’s natural to think about painting the interior walls first. But painting the outside of your house can be a huge opportunity to increase street appeal, refresh the property and increase the home’s value.

Brick, weatherboard, aluminium siding and modern composite cladding can all be painted if you want to update the look of your home. If that’s too much work, a few touch-ups to external features like window frames, door frames and doors can also have a major impact on street appeal. Combined with professional house washing, those minor paint jobs can make a big difference to the look of your home.

Focus on Painting High-Impact Areas

A fresh coat of paint will increase the value of your home. But you need to draw the line somewhere. You could paint your entire house, inside and out, but you need to make sure you’re getting value for money. If you spend thousands painting feature walls in all the living areas, will you get that money back during the sale? If not, focus on painting areas that will make the biggest difference, like:

  • Exterior door and window frames
  • High-use areas like living rooms
  • Kitchen and bathroom cabinetry
  • Roofs and gutters
  • Master suites

Planning a painting project? The paint products you choose can have a drastic effect on the final result. The right paint can improve the way your home looks and provide protection against the sun, weather and the wear and tear of everyday life.

There’s no shortage of paint products to choose from. Whatever design aesthetic you’re trying to achieve, you’ll be able to find a paint to match. The only thing you really need to worry about is whether you’re using an interior or exterior paint. The two products are very different and they often can’t be interchanged. So what’s the difference between them? In this article we’re going to cover interior and exterior paints in more detail and discuss why it’s important to use the right one for your application.

How Paints Are Made

To explain the difference between interior and exterior paint, the best place to start is with a refresher on how paint is made. Paint contains a few basic ingredients:

  • Solvents. Solvent is the base component of all paints and is what makes the paint “wet”. The other components are mixed into the solvent, allowing you to paint them onto the wall with a brush or roller. As paint dries, the solvent evaporates, leaving behind a layer of pigment and resin.
  • Resin. Resin is used as a binding agent that holds the other ingredients together and helps them to adhere to a surface. Different types of paint use different resins such as acrylic emulsions, polyester, epoxy and urethane alkyds. Each type of resin has distinct properties that make it suitable for certain types of applications.
  • Pigments. Pigment gives paint its colour. Pigments are created in dozens of different ways, from both natural and synthetic compounds.
  • Additives. The above three ingredients are found in every paint, but some paints also contain other additives. Additives enhance certain properties of the paint, such as improving UV or mould resistance.

Exterior Paints

Exterior paints are designed to survive outdoor conditions. The real challenge for exterior paints is being able to stand up to the sun, storms and salty air of the Gold Coast. Over time, exposure to UV radiation, humidity, rain and salty air can bleach pigments and break down the resins in paint. This results in paint jobs that prematurely fade, bubble, crack and peel away from the outside of your home or commercial building.

Modern exterior paints are specifically designed to stand up to these harsh conditions. Typically, exterior paints are formulated with softer resins that are less prone to cracking due to heat expansion. They also contain additives that protect the paint from UV radiation, mould and mildew, significantly prolonging the life of your paint job.

Interior Paints

Used in spaces that aren’t exposed to harsh weather, interior paints are designed to stand up to a different set of challenges. In most cases, interior paints contain harder resins, fewer additives and they use non-toxic solvents with low amounts of volatile compounds, reducing the health risks to your family. Harder resins also make interior paints washable and less prone to picking up unsightly scuff marks and stains over time. This means interior paints are safer for indoor use and that they can withstand the rough and tumble of everyday life.

Why It’s Important to Choose the Right Paint

Choosing the right paint for your project can have a huge impact on the finished result. Available in thousands of different colours, textures and finishes, it’s simple to find a high-quality paint product to suit any area of your home. You just need to be mindful that you’re not mixing up interior and exterior paints.

The differences between the two mean they’re only suitable for their intended purpose. Interior paints might look great inside a building, but they’ll quickly crack and fade under outdoor conditions. Similarly, exterior paints are unsuitable for interior use. They contain additives like mildewcides and fungicides that are slowly released into the air, and they can be harmful to your family when used indoors.

Whether you’re redecorating a single room or your entire home, the process of choosing finishes can be a lot of fun. The right wall coverings act as the perfect canvas for everything else you want to do with a room. There are two main choices available when it comes to selecting wall coverings: paint and wallpaper. Both are great options that can be used to transform a space and create the look and feel you’re after. The choice usually comes down to how much time and effort you want to put into a project. In this article, we’ll explore paint and wallpaper and see which one offers the best solution for your next DIY home improvement project.

Preparation Work

Whether you’re painting or wallpapering a surface, preparation is the key to getting a high quality, long-lasting result. There’s no point in spending big money on quality paints and wallpapers if you aren’t going to make sure they have the best possible chance of staying on the wall.

The preparation needed for a quality paint job is straightforward. Repair any imperfections using plaster and then clean the wall with a gentle soap and warm water. You’ll also need to mask off any windows, switches, lights and other fittings that you don’t want to get paint on. Once that’s done, you can get started with priming and painting your room.

Preparing a surface for wallpaper can be a little more complicated. Just like painting, it’s important to repair any imperfections in the wall as these will show through at the end. While you can skip masking off, you will still need to prepare the wall with a layer of paint-on primer. A fresh coat of primer improves the appearance of wallpaper and prevents the adhesive from damaging the wall. Primer is also an important step if the colour of the wall is significantly different from the colour of the wallpaper.

Time Invested in the Project

In most cases, it takes about the same amount of time to apply paint as it takes to apply wallpaper. Remember that when painting you’ll need to lay down at least two coats of colour, and masking off your area can take a bit of extra time. But, painting is a much easier DIY task than wallpapering, which can take a bit of practice to get right. Once you’ve got the hang of it, wallpapering can be quick, but if it’s your first time or if you’re using wallpaper with a complex pattern, you can expect the process to take much longer than painting.

Painting is More Affordable

Wall coverings are still an area where you get what you pay for. High quality paints will adhere well, last longer and look better than cheap products. The same is true for wallpaper. While you can find paper and adhesives for cheap, the result is often that they’re harder to work with, making it more difficult to achieve a quality finish. When you take all the expenses into consideration – including the tools you’ll need to get each job done – painting works out to be more affordable than wallpaper.

Selection and Durability

Whether you want to wallpaper or paint, you’ll be able to find products in just about every colour, pattern and finish you want. If you want a patterned look – like for a feature wall – it’s hard to go past wallpaper. But modern paint products are available with a huge selection of textures and finishes that make them ideal for every design aesthetic.

So the choice between wallpaper and paint comes down to how your family uses the space. Quality wallpaper is tough and will look great for years. Lower quality wallpapers are prone to fading and peeling, especially if they’re exposed to a lot of sunlight or live in a room with high humidity. On the other hand, quality paints are ideal for all rooms and high-traffic areas, and it’s simple to touch up any damage to the paintwork.

Your house is your castle, and that’s how it should make you feel every time you come home. That’s especially true of bedrooms. When you arrive home after a long day at work, the last thing you need is a bedroom that doesn’t look or feel like your own personal space. Repainting a bedroom can have a huge impact on the look and feel of your home, and it’s DIY-friendly if you don’t mind tackling the work yourself! To help you out, we’re going to go over our top 5 tips on how to paint a bedroom and achieve results you’ll be thrilled with.

1. Spend a Bit Extra on Quality Paints and Products

Paints and painting equipment are still one of those areas where you get what you pay for. That goes both for paint and equipment like brushes and rollers! Cheap brushes and rollers have a tendency to fall apart while you’re using them, leaving your freshly painted wall covered in roller fur and bristles that look terrible. For a simple bedroom paint job you’ll only need:

  • An angled sash cutting in brush
  • A medium nap roller

It’s a good idea to have more than one roller cover and a few different types of brush, but an angled sash cutter will do the best job for cutting in around details like window frames.

2. Prepare the Room Thoroughly

We’re sure you’ve heard it before, but good prep work is the key to any painting project. Spending extra time on preparation means the end result looks better, lasts longer and reduces the amount of cleanup.

Your prep work should involve all of the following:

  • Thoroughly wash new brushes and roller covers ahead of time
  • Clean the walls with warm water and gentle soap, allowing them to dry fully before painting starts
  • Remove the face plates from light switches and power points
  • Mask off around details like window frames, power points and light fittings
  • Lay down canvas drop cloths to protect any furniture or carpet from spills and drips

3. Think About Your Painting Technique

Now we get to the actual paintwork! Before you reach for your brush and start slapping it on, take a second to think about the order you’re going to paint the room and the technique you’ll use.

To get a seamless result like professional painters do, the best technique is to be methodical and work on one surface at a time. Pick a wall to start with and then cut-in around the edges and details. Next, roll paint onto that same wall. Paint should be rolled on as evenly as possible. That means each stroke should apply paint from the bottom of the wall to the top of the wall in a single motion. Roller strokes should also overlap by about 50% for better coverage.

Once you’ve rolled paint onto the entire wall, you can move onto the next one and start cutting-in again. For specific painting directions, follow the manufacturer’s instructions on your can of paint.

4. Get Everything Cleaned Up

Once the job is complete you’ll need to clean things up. While the paint on the wall is still wet, it’s a good idea to remove any masking tape before you get sidetracked with cleaning your brushes.

Modern water-based paints are simple to clean up. Run brushes and roller sleeves under cold water and gently work them against the bottom of the basin to get paint out of the fibres. Oil-based paints need to be cleaned up with a solvent like turpentine – just make sure there’s good ventilation in the room.

If there’s more painting to do tomorrow, wrap your brushes and rollers (leave the sleeve on the roller handle) tightly in a plastic bag.

5. Get Started Early in the Day

Natural light is your friend for painting, so get started early in the day and make sure you have enough light work by. If it’s a multi-day job, stop painting as the light fades and continue your work tomorrow. Painting in low light is difficult and the results don’t always turn out great, so it should be avoided wherever possible.

At Pristine Painting Perfection, we have been painting homes for over 10 years! Enough time to know that a neutral paint colour will never let you down. Below, we explore what neutral paint colours are and the benefits of using neutral paint colours in your home.

What Are The Benefits Of Neutral Colours?

  1. Tend to be Warm Colours

Neutral paint colours tend to be pale, warm shades with tonal hues that transform under different lighting conditions. When combined they can create complex shades and unique tones that can work effectively in any space.

  1. Freedom with Your Furniture

When it comes to designing your home, neutral paint colours are the best choice. Their warm undertones give you the flexibility to choose statement furniture, patterns and designs that add a touch of personality and colour to a room without being overwhelming.

  1. Re-Sale Value

Neutral coloured paint is also an excellent choice when deciding to sell or rent your house. Using neutral coloured paint has been shown to increase the sale value of a property by up to $2,500 (Harris, 2019).

  1. Timelessness

Nowadays, there are so many new design trends floating around. Whether it be textured feature walls, paint patterns or block colours, you want to make sure your paint colour choice lasts the test of time, something neutral coloured paint can always achieve.

What Are Neutral Colours?

  1. White/Eggshell

White or Eggshell is one of the most popular paint colours for painting a house. It can make even the darkest of spaces light and offers flexibility in all of your design choices.

  1. Beige

In recent years, beige has emerged as one of the most popular neutral paint colours for a house. Its earthy tones are right on trend and can help make any space feel welcoming.

  1. Gold to Light Brown

Gold and Light Brown paint colours are often used to connote feelings of luxury or warmth. Using these neutral colours in a space can make a room feel grand before you’ve even added furniture.

There’s nothing quite like laying down a fresh coat of house paint. The colours are vibrant, the finish is smooth and the satisfaction is unrivalled. But we’re sorry to say that even the best paint job won’t remain perfect forever. Over time, paints begin to weather and fade until they are looking tired and in need of some TLC. In this article, we want to take a look at what causes paint to fade and what you can do to keep on top of the issue.

Why Do Exterior Paints Fade?

Paints are relatively simple products that are made of a few ingredients: resin, pigment and solvent. Once you apply the paint to a wall, the solvent evaporates, leaving behind the pigment sealed in a layer of dried resin. Over time both the resin and pigment begin to lose their protective and colourful properties due to a few main reasons:

  • Sunlight is the number one killer of a good paint job. Paints that are exposed to the sun’s harsh UV rays break down far more quickly than under other conditions. This is because the UV rays break down the resin in the paint and attack the colour pigments directly.
  • Weather is another major factor in paint fading. The rain and wind strip away at the protective layer of paint over time, exposing pigments to the air and to UV rays.
  • Coastal Environments pose a challenge for exterior paints thanks to the salt and moisture in the air. Houses located in places like the Gold Coast should always be prepared and painted using specialty coastal paint products.

Why Do Interior Paints Fade?

The exterior of your house might have to withstand the sun and rain, but the interior has the rough and tumble of family life to contend with. Interior paints fade for most of the same reasons that exterior paints do. Exposure to sunlight, heat, hard use and temperature fluctuations all contribute to the breakdown of paint coatings. Since interior paints usually don’t include things like anti-UV additives, the effects of sunlight can seem even more obvious on the inside of your home. Preventing this is as simple as choosing high-quality paints, though many people opt for the additional protection of window films that reflect UV rays.

How Do I Stop Paint From Fading?

There is no perfect way to stop paint from fading. Modern painting systems are tough and can last for decades even in the sun, but there are a few things you can do to get longer life from your house paint:

  • Choose quality undercoat and paint. If you’re painting the exterior of your home, make sure to use high quality, exterior-grade paint and the manufacturer’s recommended undercoat.
  • Use gloss finishes. Glossy paints reflect more light and stand up to the sun and weather much better than matte or satin paints.
  • Use light colours. Light colours like whites and creams reflect a lot of light and resist fading for longer.
  • Avoid dark colours. Dark colours are more susceptible to fading. The dark pigments capture and hold onto more heat, accelerating the breakdown process.

When is it Time to Repaint?

The answer to this question is entirely up to you. Faded house paints don’t look very nice, and they often develop an unpleasant chalky texture, but the faded paint isn’t harmful. Repainting is mostly about protecting your house for longer. Paints and coatings like varnish are an important part of protecting timber decking and house cladding from the sun and weather. Your house won’t immediately fall apart due to faded paint, however, it’s something you should get fixed when you can. After all, a fresh paint job is more cost-effective than having to replace the weatherboards on an entire home.
